Zomato Invests Rs 500 Cr In Blinkit For Growth And Expansion

Zomato has invested Rs 500 crore in its quick commerce platform Blinkit, bringing its total investment to Rs 2,800 crore since acquiring Blinkit in August 2022.

The new investment follows Zomato raising Rs 8,500 crore in November 2024 through a Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) to strengthen its financial position for expansion. Blinkit's board has approved issuing 2,537 equity shares at Rs 19,70,181 each to raise Rs 500 crore, as per its filing with the Registrar of Companies.

Blinkit is facing tough competition from rivals like Swiggy, which runs Instamart and went public in November and Zepto- backed by Lightspeed, which raised $1.3 billion last year. Swiggy also raised Rs 4,500 crore through its IPO.

The quick commerce market also includes companies like Walmart-owned Flipkart with Minutes, Tata Digital-backed BigBasket and global e-commerce giant Amazon, which has entered India’s quick commerce market.

Blinkit is expanding its operations with a goal of having 2,000 micro-warehouses by December 2026. It recently launched Bistro, a 10-minute food delivery service and a 10-minute Blinkit Ambulance Service in some areas of Gurugram.

Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa recently announced on X that a temporary store has been opened at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj to serve pilgrims and tourists.

Blinkit reported a revenue of Rs 1156 crore for the July-September quarter, a 129% increase from last year. It had an EBITDA loss of Rs 8 crore during this period, compared to an operating loss of Rs 125 crore in the same quarter last year.
