PhonePe launched Indus last year to compete with tech giants like Google and Apple. At the time, the app store was available in English and 12 Indian languages, with no app listing fees for developers until March 2025.
Indus hosted over 2 lakh apps across 45 categories, including popular Indian brands like Zomato, Myntra, Flipkart, Dream11, and Swiggy.
The platform features a video-led app discovery system and voice search.
PhonePe acquired Indus’s parent company, founded by Rakesh Deshmukh, Akash Dongre, and Sudhir Bangarambandi, in 2022 for $90 million.
The launch of Indus was part of PhonePe’s strategy to expand its offerings before going public. Over the past few years, the Walmart-owned fintech company has grown beyond payments to include services like local commerce via Pincode, online trading with Share.Market, insurance, and loans.
