Flipkart appoints ex-Google executive Balaji Thiagarajan as chief technology and product officer

Walmart-owned flipkart has named Balaji Thiagarajan as its new chief technology and product officer (CTPO). He previously worked at google, Microsoft, Uber, Yahoo, and other companies.

“Balaji Thiagarajan will lead the OneTech organization, with a focus on accelerating Flipkart’s strategic technology priorities and driving innovation at scale, including the adoption of emerging technologies,” the company said in a prepared statement.

Flipkart said Thiagarajan brings over 25 years of experience across product, platform, and technology, having worked in both fast-growing startups and large global companies. According to his LinkedIn profile, he founded Kasu.ai in 2025, an AI platform that helps companies improve business processes.

The CTPO role was previously held by Jeyandran Venugopal until May. Venugopal had stepped down in February and is expected to join Reliance Retail Ventures as CEO.

Thiagarajan joins Flipkart amid several senior leadership changes as the e-commerce platform focuses on profitability. Earlier this year, senior executive Ankit Jain left for Swiggy Instamart, and other VP-level exits included Prajakta Kanaglekar (HR Technology) and Sandeep Karwa (Flipkart Ads Platforms).

In May, Flipkart announced it plans to hire around 5,000 new employees in 2025, focusing on quick commerce, fintech, engineering, and AI roles. The hiring will support its quick-delivery service Flipkart Minutes and fintech platform Super.money.

The company also plans to boost AI investments as it upgrades its technology and prepares for its next growth phase.
