Tesla Moves Closer to India Entry with New Hiring post after PM Modi's US trip

Tesla Inc. is hiring in India, signaling its plans to enter the market soon after CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US.

The company posted 13 job openings, including customer-facing and back-end roles, on LinkedIn on Monday.

Five of the positions, such as service technician and various advisory roles, are available in Mumbai and Delhi, while the rest, including customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, are for Mumbai.

Tesla has considered entering India for years but had held back due to concerns over high import duties. However, India has now reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%.

While India's electric vehicle (EV) market is still in its early stages compared to China, it offers a growth opportunity for Tesla as the company seeks to expand. Tesla has been facing a slowdown in global sales and recently reported its first annual decline in EV sales in over ten years.

PM Modi's US Trip

Tesla's move to enter India comes shortly after PM Modi's meeting with Elon Musk and former US President Donald Trump in Washington last week. After the meeting, Trump mentioned that PM Modi had agreed to start trade talks to reduce the US-India trade deficit and increase US military sales, including discussions on supplying F-35 fighter jets to India.

Tesla's hiring activity suggests the company is preparing to start operations in India, but there is no official confirmation on when it will begin selling cars. Analysts believe Tesla will likely focus on importing cars initially before deciding whether to set up a local manufacturing plant, depending on demand and government support.
