PM Modi Nominates 10 Celebs To Spread Awareness About Risks Of Obesity

Obesity remains a major health concern, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that about 2.5 billion people were overweight in 2022. This rising trend has sparked worries about obesity-related health risks like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the issue in his Mann Ki Baat radio address.

"WHO data shows that in 2022, about 250 crore people around the world were overweight, that is, they had more weight than required. These statistics are very serious and force all of us to think why this is happening. Excess weight or obesity gives rise to many kinds of problems and diseases," he said.

He also said that using less oil in food and managing obesity is not just a personal choice but a responsibility toward our family.

"As mentioned in yesterday’s #MannKiBaat, I would like to nominate the following people to help strengthen the fight against obesity and spread awareness on reducing edible oil consumption in food. I also request them to nominate 10 people each so that our movement gets bigger!," PM has posted on X.

He has chosen these 10 famous people to help fight obesity:

  • Industrialist Anand Mahindra
  • Actor Nirahua Hindustani
  • Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker
  • Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu
  • Actor Mohanlal

How Oil Consumption Affects Obesity

Obesity is a health condition caused by excessive body fat, increasing the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers. It happens when people consume more calories than they burn, often due to inactive lifestyles, unhealthy eating, genetics or hormonal issues. Eating too much processed food, sugary drinks and fast food leads to weight gain.

Using too much oil is a key factor in obesity since oils are high in calories—just one tablespoon has about 120 calories. Refined oils, especially those with trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids, contribute to fat buildup and inflammation, leading to weight gain. Fried and processed foods add extra calories without providing essential nutrients. Over time, too much oil can slow metabolism, raise bad cholesterol (LDL), and cause insulin resistance, increasing obesity risk.

Obesity affects both physical and mental health, leading to joint pain, breathing problems, low self-esteem, and depression. Managing it requires a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle changes.
