Lok Sabha and MeitY Sign MoU for Launch of ‘Sansad Bhashini’ to Enhance AI-Powered Multilingual Parliamentary Operations

An MoU was signed between the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) to develop the Sansad AI solution. 

The agreement was signed in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister for MEITY, Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The ‘Sansad Bhashini’ initiative aims to provide AI-driven multilingual support and improve parliamentary operations.

Both the Lok Sabha Secretariat and MEITY will work together to develop tools and products using parliamentary data. This data will help train and improve AI systems. Bhashini will contribute its translation expertise and technical support.

Ashwini Vaishnaw thanked to Om Birla for his leadership and expressed hope that this initiative would improve parliamentary processes through advanced AI. He believes ‘Sansad Bhashini’ will boost multilingual accessibility, simplify legislative documentation, and enhance India’s role in tech-driven governance.

Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, was also present. Gaurav Goyal, Joint Secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, signed the MoU on behalf of the Secretariat.

“The “Sansad Bhashini” initiative is proving useful for smooth functioning of Parliament related work and for making proceedings available to Hon’ble Members in multiple languages ​​simultaneously. This will enable our Hon’ble Members of Parliament, researchers and academia to easily access translation of Parliament debates in any language,” Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla said in a post on X. 

The key AI initiatives under Sansad Bhashini are:

1. AI-Based Translation
   • Effortless translation of debate documents, agenda files, committee meetings and other parliamentary content into regional languages.
   • Promotes linguistic diversity and ensures accessibility for all citizens.
2. AI-Powered Chatbot for Parliament Website
   • An interactive chatbot to help members and officials find important procedural rules and documents.
   • Provides instant, accurate answers, saving time spent on searches.
   • Continuously improves through user interactions to become more efficient.
3. Speech-to-Text Conversion & Live Interpretation
   • Converts spoken debates into text with real-time transcription.
   • Available in Indian languages for easy access and reference.
   • Features background noise reduction, customizable vocabulary and accurate documentation tools.
4. Speech-to-Speech Conversion with Real-Time Transcription
   • Enables real-time speech translation, making discussions available instantly in different languages.
   • Automatically summarizes long discussions to support quicker decision-making and better record-keeping.
