First 'Made-in-India' Chip To Roll Out In 2025, says Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the first 'Made in India' chip will be launched this year, during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

It was initially expected to launch in December 2024, as Vaishnaw mentioned at last year's Davos summit.

Vaishnaw also noted that industry stakeholders have shown strong confidence in India's semiconductor programme.

“Our first ‘Made in India’ chip will be launched this year, and now we’re focusing on the next phase, where we aim to bring equipment manufacturers, material manufacturers, and designers to India,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw.

He also mentioned, “For materials, we need to improve from parts-per-million purity to parts-per-billion purity. This will require major changes in the process, and the industry is working to make this happen.”

India's ambitions in semiconductor industry

In December 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Semicon India program with a budget of Rs 76,000 crore to develop the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India. The program aims to offer financial support to companies investing in semiconductors, display manufacturing, and design ecosystems.

The minister who leads the India AI Mission, emphasized that the country is on track to benefit from emerging AI technology. The government is currently working on the next phase of its AI mission, which focuses on two main goals- developing an indigenous AI model and designing a homegrown AI chip.

The India AI Mission also aims to achieve three key objectives by 2025: creating a common computing facility with 10,000 GPUs, building a strong talent pipeline, and focusing on AI applications.

Vaishnaw also highlighted that the government plans to establish a "right regulatory framework" for AI, ensuring a balance between innovation and regulation.
