In a significant relief for regular travellers, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a new FASTag-based annual pass. Priced at Rs 3,000, the pass will be available from August 15, 2025.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system run by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to automatically deduct toll charges as vehicles pass through toll plazas, without the need to stop or pay by cash. A FASTag sticker is placed on the vehicle’s windshield and is linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account.

This system helps save time and fuel, reduces congestion at toll booths, and promotes digital payments. It also allows users to track their travel and toll expenses easily. FASTag is now mandatory for all vehicles on national highways in India.

What is the validity, and who can apply for it?

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a new FASTag-based annual pass for frequent highway travellers. Priced at Rs 3,000, the pass will allow unlimited travel on national highways and is aimed at reducing toll expenses and improving convenience for regular commuters. The new scheme will come into effect from August 15, 2025.

It is expected to save time, cut fuel costs, and promote smoother, cashless movement across toll plazas using FASTag technology.

How to activate the FASTag-based annual pass?

The annual pass will be activated on existing FASTags, so users won’t need to purchase a new one. Minister Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that a dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be available on the Rajmarg Yatra App, as well as on the official websites of NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

How will it benefit the users?

According to the ministry, regular users can save up to Rs 7,000 a year with the new FASTag annual pass, as the average toll per trip will reduce from Rs 50 to Rs 15. Minister Nitin Gadkari added that this policy solves a long-standing issue of toll plazas being located within a 60 km range and makes toll payments easier with a single, low-cost transaction.

How long is the Annual Pass valid?

As the name suggests, it is valid for 12 months from the date of activation.
