Govt Launches New Aadhaar App With Face ID Authentication To Boost Digital India

The government has launched on tuesday a new Aadhaar app to make it easier and safer for users to verify and share their Aadhaar details digitally—no need to carry physical cards or submit photocopies anymore.

The app was launched in Delhi by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who said it's a step forward in digital innovation, making Aadhaar verification faster and more secure.

According to the IT ministry, the “Aadhaar Face Authentication” feature is already being used for over 15 crore transactions every month.

Right now, the app is available to a small group of users. The UIDAI will roll it out to everyone after collecting feedback.

Vaishnaw highlighted that the app will let users share only the necessary information, protect privacy, and prevent Aadhaar misuse or forgery.

In his opening speech, Vaishnaw called AI the “new industrial revolution.” He urged everyone to share ideas on how AI can be used with digital public infrastructure (DPI) to boost growth while protecting privacy.

His remarks come as the government ramps up efforts to adopt AI and encourage innovation in the field. Just a day earlier, Vaishnaw mentioned that the government is close to finishing its review of proposals to build homegrown large language models (LLMs).

“It (the new app) will give Aadhaar number holders complete control over their personal information. The app allows digital verification and exchange via a requesting application or by scanning a QR code, eliminating the need for physical photocopies while ensuring privacy,” the IT ministry said in the statement.

Vaishnaw called Aadhaar the " aadhaar (foundation)" of many government programs and highlighted the importance of AI and digital public infrastructure (DPI) in building India’s digital future.

He invited stakeholders to share ideas on using AI with DPI to boost growth, while making sure privacy stays a top priority.
