Three visionary leaders — Pranjal Sinha, Vikram Kumar, and Akshetha Maithri Ashok — are driven by the vision of Solving the "Taarekh Pe Taarekh" Pain Point of India" with their startup, Sama, a legal-tech ODR platform, specializing in promoting out-of-court settlements.

The journey of the leaders started when they dealt with a disappointing experience. But, the best part of their startup story is that instead of overlooking the problem, they saw it as a world full of opportunities, and with a clear goal of making dispute resolution timely and affordable for everyone, they built a business named Sama.

Innovative Minds Behind Sama

Driven by a shared vision, trio visionary leaders — Pranjal Sinha (Co-founder & CEO), a lawyer from Delhi; Vikram Kumar (Co-founder & COO), an engineer from Bihar; and Akshetha Maithri Ashok (Co-founder & CLO), a lawyer from Kerala — aimed to provide timely and affordable dispute resolution services to all.

Pranjal and Akshetha were batchmates in law school, and Vikram met Pranjal at the Startup Weekend event hosted by IIM-Calcutta. Soon, their conversation turned into a strong bond of friendship. During their conversation, Pranjal shared a significant gap in the market about the legal industry. With their shared vision, the trio teamed up and embarked on their entrepreneurial journey to address the particular gap.

Pain Point of India

During his college years, one day, Pranjal met a Supreme Court judge who visited his campus and discussed the overwhelming burden faced by the judiciary. Curious, Pranjal asked, "If you work so much, then why over five crore court cases are pending across various courts in the country, with 80,000 alone in the Supreme Court?”

The judge then shared a shocking reality— he handles 150 cases in 6 hours. This revelation struck a chord with Pranjal, sparking a question: How can we help the courts become more efficient? Could a legal case be resolved completely online, without going to court, and in a peaceful manner? The answer was yes—with Online Dispute Resolution.

Determined to find a solution, Pranjal met Vikram at a startup weekend. He shared his thoughts, his concerns, and his vision. Vikram was deeply impressed by his passion and the sheer drive to make a difference in the country's judicial system. This became a turning point in their life.

Turned A Gap Into Success

Together, Pranjal, Vikram and Akshetha started brainstorming solutions, believing that if they could solve real-life disputes efficiently, cases would naturally come their way. But to their surprise, not a single case reached them. Instead of giving up, the trio took matters into their own hands. They launched the Indian Mediation Week Campaign with the slogan "Suljhao magar pyaar se."

To create awareness, they started distributing pamphlets on the streets. Akshita, a talented singer, joined their efforts, drawing crowds by singing songs. Slowly but surely, people began to take notice.

Their relentless efforts paid off in 2019 when they secured a crucial government tender to resolve 10,000 cases. After years of struggle, from 2015 to 2019, their perseverance finally bore fruit. It was a journey of sheer determination, and ultimately, their hard work led to success.
