Edtech unicorn upGrad has launched an incubator to support artificial intelligence (AI) startups in India.
The company has set aside Rs 100 crore to help these startups with funding and resources to develop new AI products.
This follows upGrad’s recent partnerships with industry and the government to train over a million people in AI skills and set up AI Centers of Excellence across the State to boost economic growth.
With this initiative, upGrad aims to use AI to make education more personalized by developing custom learning paths, scalable tutoring, and smarter assessments.

Ronnie Screwvala, Co-founder and Chairperson, upGrad said, “Having AI capabilities is not a calendared program anymore, it’s a fundamental/ bare minimum skill. India is sitting at an epicenter where not only do we want to disrupt but also be the disruptor and so this ‘upGrad AI Incubator’ is that opportunity - a strong incubating combinator that will turbocharge our people resources and aspirations to the next phase of growth we want to see.”
“As AI is in its early stages, we are committed to building a robust infrastructure that supports and trains millions across all economic levels - through upskilling and nurturing ideas and talent,” Screwvala added.
The incubator will help startups create ready-to-use AI technologies for learning, skills training and workforce development, making them easy to use across different industries.
In the coming months, upGrad plans to invest in 5-6 AI startups with small stakes, allowing it to stay updated on new innovations without full ownership.
The launch comes after upGrad’s recent partnerships with industry and government to train over a million people in AI and set up AI Centers of Excellence across India. For its first investment, upGrad has supported ZuAI, a Bengaluru-based startup that provides a 24/7 AI-powered tutor for students. The investment details have not been shared.
