Swiggy Temporarily Suspends Its Hyperlocal Delivery Service Genie

Swiggy has temporarily stopped its Swiggy Genie service — a hyperlocal delivery option — in many big cities across India. Users in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR are seeing the service marked as “temporarily unavailable.”

When asked about it on social media, Swiggy said their team is working to bring Genie back, but they haven't given a specific date. This isn't the first time this has happened — in 2022, Swiggy paused Genie in a few cities to focus more on food delivery and Instamart.

This move follows a trend in the quick delivery space. Zomato recently shut down its 15-minute food delivery service, “Quick,” just four months after its launch. These changes show that delivery companies are refocusing on what works best, aiming for better efficiency and customer demand.

This isn’t the first time Swiggy has paused its Genie service. Back in 2022, it shut down Genie in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad due to high demand for its food delivery and Instamart services.

The latest suspension comes shortly after Swiggy expanded its Bolt service to 500 cities, including many Tier-II and Tier-III areas. Launched in October 2024, Bolt delivers selected ready-to-eat meals from nearby partner restaurants within 10 minutes, covering a 2-km radius. It now makes up over 10% of Swiggy’s total orders and includes 45,000+ restaurants, such as KFC, McDonald’s, Subway, Faasos, Burger King and Curefoods.

Meanwhile, rival Zomato recently shut down its 15-minute food delivery service Quick and Homestyle Meal option Everyday due to low demand. CEO Deepinder Goyal shared this update in a letter to shareholders during the January–March financial results.
