Microsoft will shut down Skype on today (May 5, 2025) and stop supporting the video-calling app. The company is focusing on Microsoft Teams as its main communication platform and feels Skype is no longer needed.
This decision wasn’t sudden—Microsoft had already announced it earlier this year, giving users enough time to switch to Teams.

“In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub,” said Microsoft.
Microsoft is asking both free and paid Skype users to switch to Microsoft Teams, which has similar features for chatting and working together. This change doesn’t affect Skype for Business users. Skype users can also log into Teams on supported devices using their existing Skype login.
Skype was launched in 2003 to make online communication easier. But over time, it became less popular due to the rise of platforms like Zoom and google Meet. Microsoft is retiring Skype to simplify its services and focus on Teams, which offers better tools for both personal and work use.
Microsoft has already stopped selling new Skype Subscriptions, Skype Numbers, and Skype Credit, showing that it's slowly shutting down the platform.
Users who don’t want to switch to Teams have plenty of other options. Apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Discord, Viber, Webex Meetings, and FaceTime offer similar features to Skype and Teams.
