Pixxel, Digantara Launch Satellites With SpaceX Rocket For Earth Monitoring And Space Surveillance

Bengaluru-based spacetech startups Pixxel and Digantara launched their satellites on SpaceX's Transporter-12 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Pixxel is the first private Indian company to build its own satellite constellation using advanced hyper-spectral technology, which can observe Earth in over 150 bands. This technology benefits sectors like agriculture and defense.

Pixxel's three Firefly satellites are the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral satellites. They are six times sharper than the 30-meter standard and can capture details that conventional systems cannot.

Digantara Aerospace launched Space Camera for Object Tracking (SCOT), the world’s first commercial satellite for tracking objects as small as 5 cm orbiting Earth, to ensure safer space operations.

"For the first time a 5 meter hyperspectral is available. That is what makes it unique, not just in India, but globally," Pixxel co-founder and CEO Awais Ahmed said.

Lt Gen A K Bhatt, Director General, Indian Space Association (ISpA), said, "This milestone by Pixxel, marks a significant step forward, as hyperspectral satellite imaging has a potential to play a transformative role for many use cases, especially the defence sector. The advanced hyperspectral imaging capabilities of these satellites are poised to unlock new possibilities."

Digantara CEO Anirudh Sharma said SCOT is designed to improve space safety, manage traffic better and support national security efforts.

Founded in 2018 by Anirudh Sharma, Rahul Rawat, and Tanveer Ahmed, Digantara is developing a complete space operations system to support all stages of spacecraft missions.

Its flagship product is a space debris detector, and it plans to build a satellite network to track objects as small as 1 cm.

About Pixxel

Founded in 2018 by Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel is creating a network of hyperspectral Earth satellites to provide imaging services for industries like agriculture, mining and the environment.

Pixxel has over 60 clients, including the US National Reconnaissance Organization, Rio Tinto, British Petroleum, and India’s Ministry of Agriculture, using data from its hyperspectral demo satellites.
