The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is working on a feature that will let users save their most-used UPI ID on merchant websites like e-commerce, food delivery or travel apps.
This means people won’t have to enter their UPI ID or select a UPI app every time they make a payment, making the process faster and smoother.
Before launching this, NPCI needs approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This feature is similar to how card details can be saved using tokenisation.

“NPCI is toying with this idea, which is being referred to as UPI Meta. It has not been officially launched or published as a protocol yet, but NPCI officials have already discussed this with industry executives,” said one of the people.
This new feature will let users save their UPI ID on a merchant’s website or app, making future payments quicker.
It works like saving card details for faster checkouts. Right now, users have to go through several steps—choosing UPI, then selecting the app or entering the UPI ID—each time they pay online. This update aims to simplify that process.
NPCI also wants smaller UPI apps like Cred, Navi, Super.Money, and jupiter to grow, so that the UPI market isn’t dominated just by PhonePe and google Pay, which currently handle over 80% of transactions.
