Linda Yaccarino Resigns as CEO of X After Two-Year Tenure

Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as CEO of X (formerly Twitter) after two years, ending a major chapter for the Elon Musk-owned platform.

In a post on X, Yaccarino called her time at the company “the opportunity of a lifetime” and thanked Musk for giving her the chance to help protect free speech, turn the company around, and shape X into the “Everything App.”

Yaccarino, a former advertising leader and NBCUniversal executive, joined X in June 2023. She was brought in to help rebuild the company’s advertising business, which had faced challenges due to Musk’s changes to content moderation policies.

“After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X. When Elon Musk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company. I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,” she said in a post on X.

“Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with xAI. X is truly a digital town square for all voices and the world’s most powerful culture signal. We couldn’t have achieved that without the support of our users, business partners, and the most innovative team in the world," she said.

"I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world. As always, I’ll see you on X,” she added.

Advertisment

Yaccarino’s exit comes after controversy involving the Grok chatbot, which shared antisemitic content with users. Her departure also follows Musk's decision to transfer ownership of X to his AI company, xAI. While this move brought X and xAI closer together it also raised questions about Yaccarino’s role going forward.

After her resignation, Musk simply said, “Thank you for your contributions.”
