Indian Startup InspeCity and Orbital Lasers Collaborate on Satellite Life Extension

Spacetech startup InspeCity has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan-based Orbital Lasers to explore advanced laser-based technologies for clearing space debris.

The collaboration will focus on developing laser-equipped satellites to remove orbital debris and exploring other opportunities, including satellite life extension and in-orbit assembly and manufacturing (ISAM).

As part of the partnership, the startups will work together on joint technical studies, market exploration, information exchange, and compliance with regulatory frameworks in India, Japan, and other potential markets. A specific focus will be on ISAM legal frameworks to ensure smooth integration of their technologies.

Orbital Lasers is working on a high-power laser system that stabilizes objects in space including debriswithout physical contact. By vaporizing surface areas of objects, the lasers can mitigate rotational movement, aiding in servicing or de-orbiting operations.

These systems could be deployed on InspeCity's robotic satellites, provided the necessary regulatory approvals are secured.

InspeCity’s CEO and cofounder Arindrajit Chowdhury emphasized the collaboration as a crucial step toward sustainable and efficient space operations, noting the integration of laser systems with ISAM technology could transform satellite life extension.

Orbital Lasers’ CEO Tadanori Fukushima hailed the alliance as a landmark moment in space technology cooperation between India and Japan, aiming to deliver innovative orbital solutions globally.

Founded in 2022 by IIT Bombay professor Chowdhury and his student Tausif Shaikh, InspeCity has been at the forefront of space innovation. Its flagship platform, VEDA (Vehicle for Life Extension and Deorbiting Activities), incorporates cutting-edge propulsion, robotics, and RPOD (rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking) technologies. The startup raised $1.5 Mn in a pre-seed round co-led by Antler India and Veda VC.

This partnership is part of a broader growth wave in India’s spacetech sector, which features prominent startups like Agnikul, Skyroot, Digantara, Pixxel and SatSure that are reshaping the industry with innovative solutions.
