GMR launches India’s first AI tool for traffic management

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad, operated by the GMR group, is the first airport in India to use advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and IoT. They have created an AI-powered digital platform with a modern airport predictive operations center (APOC).

By analyzing data from sources like CCTVs, Wi-Fi routers, and baggage counters, APOC's simulation models will alert operators about things like expected traffic at certain areas, crowded gates, and even outside factors like traffic.

The system brings together various stakeholders, like airlines, ground handlers, and air traffic control. It uses real-time data from nearly 40 sources with IoT sensors to improve decision-making, reduce disruptions, and ensure smooth operations.

Platform uses

The new platform combines airside, landside, and terminal operations into one system. It uses digital technologies like AI and real-time analytics to make the flying experience smoother for passengers.

Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Union civil aviation minister said. "With rising air traffic and passenger footfall, it becomes very necessary for us to advance our airport management systems. The APOC facility is going to be a game changer for the entire civil aviation operations as it will enhance efficiency, improve passenger experience, save costs and also deal with safety aspects."

SGK Kishore, Executive Director-South and Chief Innovation Officer at GMR Airports, said the company plans to introduce this technology at Delhi International Airport in the coming months. This is part of their plan to gradually use the digital twin platform at all GMR-operated airports.

Advertisment

"Our new AI-enabled digital platform and APOC set new standards in modernising operations and elevating passenger satisfaction. By integrating real-time data and advanced analytics, we ensure smooth passenger flow, reduced wait times, and personalised services, shaping the future of air travel with efficiency and safety," he added.
