CCPA to Investigate Ride-Hailing Apps Over Alleged Pricing Disparities

Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has instructed the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to investigate ride-hailing platforms over alleged differential pricing practices. 

Joshi raised concerns about reports suggesting that ride-hailing apps charge different fares for identical rides on Android and Apple devices labeling it a potential "unfair trade practice" and a violation of consumers right to transparency. 

In a post on X, the minister emphasized "zero tolerance for consumer exploitation" and directed the CCPA to submit a detailed report promptly. He also expanded the inquiry to include other sectors, such as food delivery and online ticketing, where similar pricing discrepancies might exist.

The directive follows a viral LinkedIn post highlighting fare differences for identical Uber rides booked on Android and iPhone devices. Uber denied the claim, attributing fare variations to factors like pick-up points estimated time of arrival (ETA) and drop-off locations, rather than the rider's device type.

This scrutiny is part of a broader crackdown by the CCPA on consumer internet platforms. In recent months, the watchdog has investigated ola Electric over consumer complaints and issued notices to ecommerce firms like Blinkit, Zepto and meesho for metrology violations. It has also questioned quick commerce platforms over their "10-minute delivery" claims. 

The investigation signals a heightened focus on ensuring fair practices and transparency across digital platforms.
