The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), under the Department of Telecommunications, has partnered with the deep-tech startup Trois Infotech to drive advancements in drone technology and localise drone development in India.
The collaboration aims to manufacture drones tailored for aerial surveillance, with applications in traffic management, emergency response, defense, and environmental monitoring.
Trois Infotech, based in Thiruvananthapuram, will equip these drones with industrial-grade, long-range cameras capable of facial recognition. These drones will also feature high-accuracy edge processing for stable 4G, 5G, and long-range WiFi connections, in addition to low-powered AI for real-time data processing.

The drones will use cutting-edge computer vision and AI to handle challenges such as camera movement, low-light conditions, and power constraints.
This initiative falls under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), part of the Department of Telecommunications' Universal Service Obligation Fund. The TTDF, launched in 2022, focuses on supporting Indian startups, academic institutions, and R&D organizations that design, develop, and commercialize telecommunication products and services.
The aim is to bridge the digital divide, especially in rural and remote areas, by creating affordable broadband and mobile services.
Trois Infotech, founded in 2018, specializes in AI, machine learning, IoT, and smart surveillance for the telecom sector, also expanding into cleantech with a waste management product.
While the startup has faced challenges in funding, the government's initiatives to promote deep-tech innovation, including long-term funding schemes, offer hope for the sector's growth.
