Biokraft Foods Showcases Hybrid Chicken, Targets Affordable Cultivated Meat for India

Mumbai based startup Biokraft Foods held India’s first formal tasting of cultivated meat, showcasing its hybrid chicken product which it aims to launch in 2024.

The event, attended by over 30 industry leaders, sustainability advocates and organizations, highlighted the growing acceptance of novel food technologies in India.

Biokraft Foods, founded in 2023 by Kamalnayan Tibrewal, uses advanced 3D bioprinting technology to create cultivated chicken, combining chicken cells with plant- and algae-based biopolymers to replicate the taste, texture, and nutrition of conventional chicken.

The startup works closely with the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to ensure regulatory compliance and expects approvals within six to eight months.

Positive feedback

The cultivated chicken, served as sliders and Indo-Chinese-style chili chicken during the tasting, received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Priced competitively at ₹300–350 per kg for the B2B market, the product aims to cater to India's Horeca sector and beyond, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional chicken.

Biokraft is also preparing to establish an independent R&D and production facility by 2025 to optimize costs further.

In addition to its cultivated meat, the startup is advancing pre-seed funding and leveraging support from government grants and incubators to drive innovation in India’s alternative protein sector.

CASMB President Nilesh Lele lauded the initiative stating that Biokraft Foods is positioned to revolutionize the cultivated meat industry and establish India as a global leader in sustainable food technology.
