Network18, NDTV and others join copyright battle against OpenAI

The digital news divisions of Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, along with other major media companies, have joined a lawsuit against OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, accusing it of using their copyrighted content without permission, according to Reuters.

In a court filing in New Delhi, Ambani’s Network18 group and Adani’s NDTV said they are worried that their news sites are being “scraped” and used by OpenAI to train its artificial intelligence.

A 135-page court filing, reviewed by Reuters, claims that OpenAI’s actions pose a “clear and present danger” to the copyrights of members of the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) and other media outlets.

The filing was submitted by 20 companies, including the Indian Express, Hindustan Times, NDTV, Network18, Dainik Bhaskar, and the DNPA.

This lawsuit follows several other lawsuits from both domestic and international book publishers, accusing OpenAI of copyright infringement.

The Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) has also taken the issue to the Delhi High Court on behalf of its members, including Indian publishers like Rupa Publications and S Chand, as well as global names like Bloomsbury, Penguin Random House, Cambridge University Press, and Pan Macmillan.

Last week, OpenAI told the court that Indian courts don’t have the authority to hear the copyright case, as the company doesn’t operate in India. It also argued that any order to remove the training data used for its chatbot ChatGPT would conflict with its legal duties in the United States.
