Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the Finance Secretary, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term.
This decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Pandey, an Odisha-cadre IAS officer, will replace Madhabi Puri Buch, who finishes her three-year term on February 28.
Pandey’s term as SEBI chairman follows his recent role as Finance Secretary, which he took up in September 2024. His appointment fills the position left vacant after TV Somanathan was promoted to Cabinet Secretary.

Before becoming Finance Secretary, Pandey had a successful career in key roles, including heading the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). He is well-known for overseeing the sale of Air India and the public listing of LIC.
New Role of Pandey
As Finance Secretary, Pandey played a key role in advising the Finance Minister on policy matters and managing the ministry’s work. He also represented the ministry before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and helped shape India’s fiscal and economic plans.
Now, as the new SEBI chairman, Pandey brings his extensive experience in financial management and governance, starting an exciting new chapter in his successful career.
