Ho’oponopono - Hawaiian Prayer

Ho’oponopono: Hawaiian Prayer to Heal Yourself from Within. Ho’oponopono is pronounced as HO-oh-po-no-po-no. The philosophy behind this practice is that we are all responsible for what shows up in our reality.

The H’oponopono Prayer

In  H’oponopono Prayer four aspects:

  • Repentance
  • Forgiveness
  • Gratitude
  • Love

First, you must recognize yourself responsibility for the events occurring in your life. Acknowledge how that event made you feel, and repeat the following phrases out loud or silently to yourself:

I’m Sorry

Please Forgive Me

Thank You

I Love You

Repeat this several times like  7–8 times. Now notice how the negativity is replaced with inner peace, love, and harmony and sometimes, even miracles.

You can apply this prayer to traumatic past events, destructive thought patterns, family dynamics, daily annoyances, or any other negative situations in your life.

Understanding True Forgiveness

Part of what makes the traditional Hawaiian ho’oponopono prayer so deeply moving is that it starts with humility—admitting that hurt has been caused, and saying “I’m sorry.” Before we can forgive, we must first see the wound for what it is. That recognition, both of the pain and of the person feeling it, is something we all long for.

Forgiveness here is not about erasing the past or pretending it didn’t happen. It’s about holding space for the hurt, acknowledging it fully, and then—when the heart is ready—choosing to set it down. True forgiveness has weight; it takes attention, intention, and courage. But when it’s done sincerely, it feels like breathing freely for the first time in a long while.

Historically, ho’oponopono was a bridge between divided families, a shared ritual of reconciliation. Today, it remains just as powerful, helping us release resentment towards others and ourselves. And for those carrying guilt, it can be a gentle balm—an act of self-compassion that whispers, you are still worthy of love.

Ho’oponopono for Self-Forgiveness

Hawaiian Prayer - I’m Sorry Please Forgive Me Thank You I Love You

Close your eyes. Breathe deeply. Let the world fade to the background. Then, softly repeat:
I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.

Say it again. And again. Let the words sink in until they touch the sore places inside you. End in silence, giving your heart a chance to catch up with your mind.

And when you open your eyes, notice if something feels lighter—like a knot inside you has loosened. That’s the beginning of forgiveness.
