India now has the largest number of ChatGPT users in the world, beating the United States in monthly active users, according to a new AI trends report.
India makes up 13.5% of global ChatGPT users, ahead of the U.S. (8.9%) and Indonesia (5.7%).
The report, part of Mary Meeker’s AI Trends Report, shows how quickly India is adopting AI tools. It also places India third in the world for use of the DeepSeek app, behind China (33.9%) and Russia (9.2%).

As of April 2025, the report shows that India leads the world in ChatGPT usage, making up 13.5% of global monthly active users. This is much higher than the U.S. at 8.9% and Germany at 3%. The numbers reflect India's growing interest in using AI tools.
The report also highlights the growing competition between open and closed AI models with India and China playing key roles in shaping the future of AI. As more people use AI tools, India’s lead in ChatGPT usage shows its rising influence in global tech.
With AI adoption growing fast, India is expected to play a bigger role in driving innovation, shaping policies and pushing forward industry developments worldwide.
