Many companies have applied for permission to offer satellite-based communication services in India, following recent recommendations from the telecom regulator, said Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday.
He also mentioned that India’s rollout of satellite communication services, which will support regular broadband, is expected to be the fastest in the world. The sector could generate $20 billion in revenue over the next three years—10 times more than it does now.

Scindia was speaking at a TRAI event held for World Telecom and Information Society Day.
"Trai has come out with its regulations for administrative assignment. Multiple players have applied for a licence, and I am very confident that this rollout on the satellite network will probably be the fastest in the world in the years to come, growing from the current $2.3 billion market to almost a $20 billion market by 2028," Scindia said, drawing parallels with the world's fastest rollout of 5G networks in India.
According to news agencies, Scindia said the government wants to move quickly on the satellite communication (satcom) policy. Once permissions are granted, satellite-based internet services will be able to reach across the country.
Earlier this month, TRAI suggested that satcom spectrum should be given through an administrative process, with a fee set at 4% of a company’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR). After the Union Cabinet approves this proposal, companies will be able to use the spectrum to launch satellite internet services commercially.
