Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday inaugurated the Central Power Research Institute’s Regional Testing Laboratory (RTL) at Shilapur, saying it will give a big boost to the state’s power and electric vehicle sectors.
"With this laboratory in place, electrical equipment manufacturers will no longer have to depend on Hyderabad or Bhopal for testing. Maharashtra is already emerging as a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and once EV testing begins here, the sector will get a significant boost," Fadnavis said.

The lab, approved under the 12th Finance Commission, will help cut costs and attract more investment in transformer and equipment manufacturing, Fadnavis said.
He added that Maharashtra aims to install 45,000 MW of capacity in the next three years, with a total energy sector investment of Rs 2 lakh crore planned by 2035 for generation, transmission, and distribution.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who attended the event, called the RTL a symbol of advanced science and engineering and said it would serve the growing industrial needs of western India.
He also praised Maharashtra for introducing prepaid smart meters and noted that the lab’s certification services would benefit both domestic and international power equipment markets.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the facility would attract multinational companies to Nashik, create local jobs, and establish the city as an “electric hub.”
The Nashik RTL is CPRI’s second lab in Maharashtra after Nagpur and will offer advanced services like online short-circuit testing, energy meter testing, transformer tests, impulse voltage testing up to 800 kV, and transformer oil analysis.
Fadnavis added that Maharashtra plans to provide daytime power to farmers by adding 16,000 MW of generation and gradually lower industrial tariffs by 2% annually from 2025 to 2030.
