In a significant move to enhance its deeptech capabilities, zoho Corporation has acquired Kochi-based robotics startup Asimov Robotics. The announcement was made during the inauguration of Zoho's new research and development campus in Kottarakkara, Kerala.
Founded in 2012 by Jayakrishnan T, Asimov Robotics specializes in developing humanoid robots, healthcare and assistive robots, and robotic platforms for industrial automation and disaster management. The startup gained national attention for deploying robots in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This acquisition aligns with Zoho's strategic focus on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and deep-tech innovation. In May 2022, Zoho had invested INR 20 crore in Genrobotics, marking its initial foray into the robotics sector.
Beyond the acquisition, Zoho announced a partnership with the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) to establish a deeptech product studio. This initiative aims to bring together startups and organizations dedicated to deep-tech research and product development. Zoho has formed R&D associations with several entities, including Boson Motors, Vipus Advanced Materials, vTitan, Zentron Labs, Verdant Telemetry & Antenna Systems, Netrasemi, Genrobotics, Energy 24by7, and IIT Bombay.
The Kottarakkara office will serve as a hub for Zoho's R&D projects, focusing on AI and robotics. Zoho co-founder and CEO Shailesh Davey stated, "Our Kottarakkara office will be dedicated to enhancing our R&D projects in various fields starting with AI and robotics. Apart from our own work in these fields, we also will be collaborating with like-minded deeptech organisations to further amplify our efforts."
Earlier this year, Davey revealed that Zoho is developing its own large language model (LLM) with an emphasis on Indian languages, aiming to integrate it into its products at the appropriate time.
In a related development, Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu transitioned from his role as CEO to focus on R&D initiatives as the company's "Chief Scientist." In January, he emphasized his commitment to deep R&D and rural development missions.
The acquisition of Asimov Robotics and the establishment of the deeptech product studio underscore Zoho's commitment to advancing India's position in the global deeptech landscape.
