WhatsApp Bans Over 99 lakh Accounts In India For Security Violations

Messaging platform WhatsApp banned nearly 10 million (99.67 lakhs) accounts in India in January 2025 as part of its efforts to fight spam, scams and misuse.

The Meta-owned platform shared these figures in its latest compliance report, reinforcing its focus on security.

Why accounts are banned ?

The bans were due to repeated violations of WhatsApp's terms and were in line with India's IT regulations. As a key communication platform in India, WhatsApp faces challenges like fraud, bulk messaging and impersonation. To counter this, it has strengthened its monitoring and enforcement measures.

Of the 9.9 million accounts banned, 1.3 million were removed proactively before any user complaints. WhatsApp’s automated systems detect suspicious activity, such as bulk messaging, to prevent misuse before it spreads.

WhatsApp also received 9,474 user complaints about spam and account misuse in January. This led to 239 account bans or corrective actions, including responses via email or through its India Grievance Officer.

How to prevent your WhatsApp account from getting banned?

If you send bulk messages, spam or engage in suspicious activity, your account could be at risk. WhatsApp’s automated systems and user reports help detect violations.

To avoid a ban, follow WhatsApp’s Terms of Service and avoid any abusive or illegal activity. If you receive spam or scam messages report them immediately to help keep the platform safe.
