Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has opened its first factory in southern India, taking an important step into the world’s third-largest car market.

The company plans to start delivering cars to showrooms later this month, said Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia during the plant’s launch event in Thoothukudi.

Last year, VinFast signed a deal with the Tamil Nadu government to invest up to $2 billion, with $500 million committed for the first five years. The plant aims to produce up to 150,000 vehicles per year.

The showroom will showcase VinFast’s electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7. India is the first country where VinFast is introducing right-hand drive versions of these vehicles.

Customers can pre-book the vehicles either at showrooms or online at VinFastAuto.in by paying a fully refundable amount of ₹21,000. The vehicles will be assembled locally at VinFast’s upcoming plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, said, "Chennai's legacy and its ecosystem of innovation, skilled talent, and infrastructure make it a natural choice for VinFast's first-ever dealership in Tamil Nadu, which is also our largest touchpoint across the country. With this dealership, we are proud to deepen our commitment to this city and bring our electric mobility solutions closer to customers in Tamil Nadu."

"Chennai represents the spirit of progress, and through our partnership with Maansarovar Motors, we aim to redefine the EV ownership journey—combining sustainability, technology, and service. This marks not just a retail milestone, but a step toward co-creating a greener, smarter, and future-ready India,' he added.
