Vedanta invests over ₹12,500 crore to Enhance Metal Manufacturing for Electric Vehicles

Vedanta Limited will invest ₹12,500+ crore to boost production in aluminium, zinc, ferrochrome, and steel, aiming to meet the growing needs of India’s EV industry.

The plan includes expanding aluminium smelters, value-added aluminium products, a zinc alloy plant, a new zinc roaster, and ferrochrome capacity. Vedanta’s portfolio spans aluminium, zinc, alloys, copper, steel, nickel, ferrochrome and oil & gas.

Vedanta makes aluminium products like foundry alloys (for wheels, engine blocks, cylinder heads), billets (for battery casings, HVAC systems, and EV frames). It also offers low-carbon aluminium under the brands Restora and Restora Ultra.

Industry research cited by Vedanta shows that each kg of aluminium cuts a car’s weight by 1 kg. A 100 kg reduction can boost an EV's range by 10–15%.

Vedanta’s zinc portfolio includes special high-grade zinc, continuous galvanising grade zinc and die-casting alloys. It has also launched EcoZen, a low-carbon zinc. Zinc is mainly used in galvanised steel for vehicle bodies and in alloys for components.

Vedanta is India’s only primary nickel producer, supplying mainly to the domestic market. It also makes nickel sulphate for EV battery cathodes and holds 40% of the local market.

Its copper portfolio includes rods and cathodes used in batteries, motors, inverters, wiring, and charging systems. The company notes that EVs need 3–4x more copper than regular vehicles.

Vedanta also makes iron ore, ferrochrome, and steel, which are used in different stages of EV manufacturing. The company now plans to expand into rare earth elements, graphite, vanadium, manganese, and tungsten to strengthen the EV value chain.
