OpenAI Launches 'Deep Research' to Forays into Agentic AI

Microsoft-backed AI start-up OpenAI has introduced a new AI agent called "Deep Research" in ChatGPT. This tool uses a version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 series reasoning model, allowing users to do multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks.

OpenAI has also launched a smaller version of the reasoning model, called "o3-mini," which is available to free-tier ChatGPT users.

“Today we launch deep research, our next agent. This is like a superpower; experts on demand! It can go use the internet, do complex research and reasoning, and give you back a report. It is really good and can do tasks that would take hours/days and cost hundreds of dollars,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI in a post on X.

What is Deep Research?

Deep Research is OpenAI’s new AI agent that can analyze and combine information from different online sources to create a detailed report on a topic chosen by the user. AI agents are advanced systems that can handle multi-step tasks with little help, gathering data from text, images, audio, and more to complete goals on their own.

How it works?

OpenAI's Deep Research agent uses a version of the upcoming o3 model, designed for web browsing and data analysis. This model helps the agent search, interpret, and analyze text, images, and PDFs found online, making it easier to gather and process information.

To use it, users can select 'deep research' in ChatGPT's message composer, enter their query, and attach files or spreadsheets for extra context. Once the agent starts working, a sidebar shows a summary of the steps and sources used. The process usually takes between 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the research. The final result is a detailed report within the chat, and soon these reports will include images, data visualizations and other helpful analysis for better understanding.

Deep Research isn't the first AI agent from OpenAI. The company recently introduced its Operator agent, which can handle web-based tasks like booking flights or ordering groceries. Google also has a "Deep Research" tool for its AI chatbot Gemini, which helps users by analyzing information from the web.
