NPCI, Razorpay and OpenAI join hands for e-commerce payments via ChatGPT

India’s payments regulator, NPCI, has partnered with fintech Razorpay and Microsoft-backed OpenAI to bring AI-powered payments to ChatGPT, the companies announced on Thursday.

Currently in a pilot phase, the initiative will let users make purchases via ChatGPT using India’s UPI. The pilot aims to test how AI agents can safely and securely complete transactions on users’ behalf, while keeping control with the user, the companies said.

Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are banking partners in the trial, while Tata Group’s e-commerce platform Bigbasket is one of the first platforms where users can shop directly through ChatGPT.

Oliver Jay, managing director of international strategy at OpenAI, said, “We're excited to work with NPCI and explore how we can combine advanced AI with UPI, one of the world's most trusted real-time payment networks, to unlock a new era of effortless and secure commerce.”

Notably, UPI is India’s top digital payment system, handling over 20 billion transactions monthly. Through this experiment, NPCI and OpenAI aim to explore how conversational AI can work with payment systems to make digital transactions easier within chatbots.

The collaboration between OpenAI, Razorpay, and NPCI is still in its early stages. If successful, it could expand AI use in online commerce, making payments more conversational and context-aware. Currently, the service is in pilot mode for select users and platforms, with partners evaluating user experience, security, and reliability before a wider launch.
