The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has invited proposals from startups, academia and other stakeholders to develop AI-powered tools aimed at detecting deepfakes.
This initiative is part of MeitYs broader effort to establish a trusted AI ecosystem by creating indigenous tools, guidelines, and frameworks.
The Expression of Interest (EoI) outlines several key projects:
1. Deepfake Detection Tools: These tools should use advanced deep learning algorithms, provenance-based techniques and other detection methods to verify media authenticity and identify manipulations. The solutions must be easy to integrate with web browsers and social media platforms, enabling real-time detection and automated content verification.

2. Differentiation of Ai Generated Content: MeitY wants a tool capable of embedding imperceptible markers into Ai generated content for traceability and security. This will help prevent the misuse of Ai for harmful and illegal activities.
3. Stress Testing for AI Systems: Another focus is the creation of platforms to evaluate AI systems resilience under high-stress scenarios like natural disasters, cyberattacks or operational failures. Tools based on simulation and stress evaluation metrics will ensure AI robustness in critical situations.
4. Ethical Ai Frameworks: The Ministry aims to develop frameworks ensuring Ai systems are fair, transparent, accountable and free from biases or discrimination. These frameworks will also address Ai risk assessment and cross sectoral safety measures.
This move aligns with India's vision to lead in AI innovation while balancing safety and ethics. Recently IT Secretary S. Krishnan highlighted efforts to evaluate AI solutions' safety and reliability. Similarly, Union IT Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in AI deployment.
India’s generative AI ecosystem, currently housing over 200 startups and attracting $1.2 billion in funding from 2020 to Q3 2024 provides a robust foundation for these advancements. MeitYs initiatives are expected to accelerate innovation and establish India as a hub for responsible AI development.
