Indian Govt To Launch 'Sahkar Taxi' Service Across India To Compete With Ola, Uber

The Central government is launching "Sahkar Taxi," a cooperative-based ride service to compete with Ola and Uber.

As announced by Union Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, the service will register two-wheeler taxis, rickshaws and four-wheelers. Unlike private companies, all profits will go directly to drivers instead of corporations.

"In the coming months, on the cooperative basis, we are going to launch a government cooperative sarkar taxi service like Ola and Uber. The service will register two-wheeler taxis, rickshaws, as well as four-wheeler taxis. The profits from this service will not go to any big industrialist but will go solely to the drivers of the vehicles," the Home Minister said.

A similar model, Yatri Sathi, was launched in West Bengal by the TMC government. Starting in Kolkata, it has expanded to Siliguri, Asansol and Durgapur, offering affordable fares, 24/7 support and local language options.

In Karnataka, the Namma Yathri app follows the same approach, giving drivers full earnings while offering cabs, two-wheelers and pooling services for passengers.

The announcement comes as Ola and Uber face scrutiny over their pricing. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) recently sent them notices after reports claimed fares vary based on whether a user has an Android or iPhone.
