India’s effort to boost artificial intelligence (AI) is getting a strong response. On Friday, the IndiaAI Mission said it has received 506 foundation AI proposals across three phases.
Because of the high interest, the mission has extended the deadline for phase 3 proposal submissions. The earlier deadline was April 30.

“Further dates for submission of proposals, the acceptance of new applications post April 30, will be announced subsequently, as per requirements, once the examination of proposals already submitted has been completed," IndiaAI said on its website.
In the first phase of approvals, Sarvam.ai was chosen to start developing a homegrown foundational model.
Out of all the bids, the government received 120 applications in the second round and about 67 proposals in the first round.
The IndiaAI Mission said that in the first phase of approvals, one startup was chosen to start building a homegrown foundational AI model, and more selections will be announced soon.
The government began the plan to create an Indian AI model in January this year because foreign AI models are trained on Western data and don’t fit well with Indian languages and situations.
