IIT Bombay launches india’s first deep tech VC fund to back early-stage startups

IIT Bombay has launched the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, the country’s first deeptech focused VC fund, through its Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), marking a major boost for India’s innovation ecosystem.

Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairperson of IIT Bombay’s Board of Governors, announced the fund today, with IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare present. The event was also attended by Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director for Academics, Research and Translation, and Prof. Ravindra Gudi, Deputy Director for Finance, Infrastructure, and Administration.

Professor Shireesh Kedare, director of IIT Bombay, said, "SINE, as an incubator, has played a pivotal role in the development of startups ecosystem in IIT Bombay by providing critical infrastructure support, mentorship, access to capital, visibility and liquidity. The fund will further enhance its role to speed up the journey from cutting-edge research to commercially viable products. Our fund will be the first institute-linked investment manager to back such promising ventures.”

The Y-Point Venture Capital Fund has a total size of ₹250 crore and aims to boost India’s deep tech startups. It seeks to fill a key gap in the innovation ecosystem by providing early-stage risk capital. 

The fund will support startups working on complex, research-driven technologies that need long development times, high investment, and specialized technical guidance.

For over 20 years, SINE IIT Bombay has supported breakthrough ideas from lab to market, helping over 500 startups and 1,000 innovators. With deep insight into the challenges faced by deep tech ventures, SINE launched the new Y-Point Venture Capital Fund to help early-stage companies scale into market-ready businesses.

The fund will invest in startups from IIT Bombay and other top research institutions in india, focusing on pre-seed and seed stages. It plans to back 25–30 startups with a maximum investment of ₹15 crore per company.

By creating an institutional funding path for deep tech, the fund aims to encourage private sector participation in innovation and strengthen India’s position as a global hub for advanced technology.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, praised IIT Bombay and SINE for their contributions to India’s research and innovation. The event ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Nishant Sharma, Professor in Charge at SINE.
