Tech giant google’s parent company, Alphabet, is reportedly planning a $6 billion investment to set up a 1 GW data centre and supporting power infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
According to Reuters, the data centre will be located in Visakhapatnam. The plan also includes a $2 billion investment in renewable energy to power the facility.

This will be Alphabet’s first data centre investment in India and its largest in Asia—both in terms of capacity and investment size.
The state’s IT minister Nara Lokesh told Reuters, “We’ve made certain announcements like Sify (550-MW data centre to be built in the state), which are public… There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements”.
Lokesh stated that the Andhra Pradesh government has already secured data centre investments totaling 1.6 GW in capacity and plans to scale this up to 6 GW over the next five years.
He added that most of these data centres will operate on green energy, with the state expecting to need around 10 GW of power generation capacity during this period.
This development comes as the surge in generative AI drives big tech companies to invest heavily in data centres to strengthen their cloud capabilities.
Microsoft has pledged around $3.7 billion for cloud and AI infrastructure in India, while Amazon plans to invest nearly $13 billion in the country’s cloud infrastructure by 2030.
