Foxconn, a Taiwan-based electronics manufacturing company has completed its $230-million project to build dormitories for workers in Tamil Nadu. An audit is now underway to ensure the facility is ready for the company’s large female workforce, according to an ET report.
Foxconn has completed its $230-million worker dormitory project on its Sriperumbudur premises, allowing many female employees to easily walk to their dorms without needing transportation. The project spans 20 acres and includes six 10-story residential blocks, two utility blocks, and a total of 18,000 beds.
The facility also offers recreational amenities like cricket, badminton, basketball, and volleyball spaces, along with a canteen serving subsidized meals and a small grocery store for daily essentials.
Eyes on Market Expand
This is Foxconn’s first step toward establishing worker housing in India, aligning with its 2022 plan to shift significant iPhone production from China’s Zhengzhou plant to Tamil Nadu. Discussions with the Tamil Nadu government in 2022 focused on housing and future investments.

Recently, Foxconn updated its hiring practices, removing restrictions on age, gender, and marital status after allegations of discrimination against married women surfaced.
In August, Foxconn opened an industrial housing project built by the Tamil Nadu government to accommodate 18,720 women employees working for the key Apple supplier.
India has rapidly grown its Apple iPhone production, contributing 12-14% of global output in FY24. By 2026-27, Apple aims to assemble 32% of global iPhone volume and 26% of its value in India. Foxconn has also begun manufacturing the iPhone 16 Pro Series at its Tamil Nadu plant, investing $31 million in new equipment.
