Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has bought PlayAI, a voice technology startup, as part of its strong focus on artificial intelligence.
This comes soon after Meta’s major $14.3 billion purchase of another AI company, ScaleAI. That deal was aimed at building advanced AI systems with human-like abilities.

According to a memo seen by Bloomberg, PlayAI’s entire team will now join Meta and report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently came from another voice AI company, Sesame AI.
PlayAI is known for its work in voice cloning, real-time speech, and smart voice assistants in multiple languages. Meta is expected to use this tech to improve voice features in products like Quest VR headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses. Developers might also be able to use PlayAI’s tools to create custom voice agents and characters.
Meta has made AI its main focus this year, building strong infrastructure and hiring top talent. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently launched Meta Superintelligence Labs, to be led by ScaleAI’s CEO Alexandr Wang. The goal is to be the first to develop superintelligent AI.
Meta has not yet revealed how much it paid to acquire PlayAI.
