Ex-Meta Executive Sheeladitya Mohanty Joins OpenAI as Marketing Lead in India

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has hired former Meta executive Sheeladitya Mohanty as its India marketing lead, as it looks to grow its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.

“Excited to join OpenAI as the Marketing Lead for India and contribute to the mission of building AGI for the benefit of humanity,” said Mohanty in a post on LinkedIn.

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, plans to open its first office in Delhi later this year to strengthen ties with local businesses, developers, and universities. Sheeladitya Mohanty, who spent nearly 10 years at Meta leading marketing for Meta AI and Facebook in Asia-Pacific, will take charge as India marketing lead. 

He has also worked at Microsoft and Nokia India. India is now ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the U.S., with weekly users growing over four times in the past year. 

The country is also among the top five developer markets worldwide and has the largest student base using ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s India office is part of a broader push in the country. Recent steps include launching ChatGPT Go at ₹399 a month with UPI payments, starting OpenAI Academy with the IT Ministry to boost AI literacy, and adding better Indic language support in GPT-5.

The company will also host its first Education Summit this month and a Developer Day later this year to connect with students, startups, and businesses.
