Crypto Unicorn CoinDCX announces ₹111 crore ESOP buyback for employees

coindcx has announced an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) buyback worth ₹111 crore, benefiting over 500 current and former employees.

Sumit Gupta, co-founder of CoinDCX, announced on LinkedIn that the ESOP buyback is designed to provide real value to employees and strengthen the company’s ownership-driven culture.

“We are including former employees because their contribution is permanent. Moving on to new ventures doesn’t erase the sweat equity  they poured into our foundation,” it added.

The ESOP buyback will let eligible employees, including former staff, sell part of their vested stock options, giving them a chance to benefit from the company’s growth.

The move is also one of the largest liquidity events by a cryptocurrency exchange in India. Analysts told CNBC that such initiatives can help retain talent and reward employees for their long-term contributions.

CoinDCX was founded in 2018 by Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal. The platform lets users trade cryptocurrencies and other digital assets and claims to have served over 2 crore users, with quarterly trading volumes exceeding ₹2.4 lakh crore.

The startup has raised more than $244 million from investors including Pantera Capital, B Capital Ventures, and Bain Capital.

For FY25, CoinDCX reported a net profit of Rs 1.7 crore up nearly 15% from Rs 1.5 crore the previous year. Its operating revenue rose 43% to Rs 559.6 crore from Rs 391.8 crore in FY24. The company primarily earns revenue from transaction fees charged for cryptocurrency trading on its platform.
