ChatGPT Atlas OpenAI Launches AI-Powered Browser to Compete with Google

OpenAI has officially entered the web browser market with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser announced during a livestream on Tuesday. This marks OpenAI’s biggest step yet in its growing competition with google and its Gemini-integrated Chrome browser.

Global Rollout and Availability

ChatGPT Atlas is now available globally for macOS users, with versions for Windows, iOS and Android coming soon. However, its most advanced feature, “Agent Mode,” is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to The Verge.

Altman explained that the goal of Atlas is to make web browsing more interactive and intuitive, said that the chat experience in a browser could change how people use the internet in the future.

A Browser Designed for the AI Era

Atlas combines traditional web browsing with chatgpt’s conversational interface. When users open a link, the browser displays a split-screen view — one side shows the webpage, and the other opens a live ChatGPT conversation.

This setup lets ChatGPT summarize pages, answer questions, and assist users while they browse. Users can also switch to a normal browser view if they prefer.

During the demo, OpenAI showed Atlas’s ability to summarize webpages and its “cursor chat” feature, which lets users highlight text (like an email draft) and instantly get it rewritten or refined by ChatGPT.

Key Features of ChatGPT Atlas

Agent Mode: Lets ChatGPT perform actions like booking flights, making reservations, or editing documents — building on earlier tools like “Operator” and “ChatGPT Agent.”
Memory: Atlas remembers user preferences and ongoing tasks to provide a more personalized experience. Users can edit or delete these memories anytime.
Privacy Controls: Includes an incognito mode, allowing users to browse without saving activity or memories.
Smooth Performance: According to Altman, “It’s smooth, quick and really nice to use.”

The AI Browser Battle Heats Up

OpenAI’s launch comes amid fierce competition in AI-powered search and browsing. Earlier, OpenAI introduced SearchGPT, a prototype AI search engine in mid-2024.
Since then, other players have joined the race — Perplexity AI launched its Comet browser, which summarizes content and performs tasks like shopping or cleaning up emails.

Meanwhile, Google is working on integrating its Gemini AI assistant deeper into Chrome to handle daily activities like booking and scheduling.

The Future of “Agentic” Browsing

With its sleek interface and powerful AI tools, ChatGPT Atlas positions OpenAI as a strong challenger to Google in the browser and search market. The launch signals the start of a new era — where browsing becomes interactive, intelligent and personalized through AI.
