Bajaj Auto Launches Two New Electric Versions of the Chetak Scooter

Strengthening its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, Bajaj Auto has introduced two new electric variants of its iconic Chetak scooter.

The newly launched Chetak 35-Series, priced between INR 1.2 Lakh and INR 1.27 Lakh, features a lighter design and an enhanced 3.5 kWh battery. Bajaj Auto plans to commence exports of the Chetak 35-Series to a dozen international markets by the first quarter of FY25, with offerings tailored for both premium and affordable segments.

“We are actively planning exports of the Chetak 35-Series to around a dozen markets, which could begin within six months,” said Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, at the launch event.

To meet increasing demand, Bajaj aims to scale up production to 60,000 units per month within three months. The company also plans to introduce premium and affordable versions of the escooter, with potential models designed for delivery purposes, though not exclusively targeting gig workers.

The launch comes amid intensifying competition in India’s two-wheeler EV market. Recently, ola Electric unveiled its gig worker-focused escooters, the S1 Z and Gig, starting at INR 39,999, directly competing with yulu and similar players.

While the festive season in October spiked sales, November saw an 18% month-on-month drop in total EV registrations, according to Vahan data. However, year-on-year registrations showed a 23.5% increase, reflecting overall market growth.
