Apple CEO Says Most iPhones Sold In US In June Quarter To Come From India

Apple will make most of the iPhones sold in the US this quarter in India, while nearly all iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, and AirPods will come from Vietnam. This shift is part of Apple’s move to reduce its dependence on China and avoid high US tariffs.

However, CEO Tim Cook didn’t share exact numbers or future targets for how much production will shift.

"For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of the iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin," Cook told analysts during the company's earnings call. "I would not want to predict the mix of production in the future, but I wanted to give you clarity for the June quarter," he added.

He added that China will still be the main manufacturing base for Apple products sold outside the US. Currently, Apple faces a 145% import tax on products made in China and sold in the US, and talks between the two countries are stalled.

In comparison, the US has imposed a 27% tariff on goods from India starting April 2. Still, India may be the first country to reach a trade deal with the US, according to earlier comments by the Trump administration.

Apple also said India set a new sales record this quarter, and the company plans to open more retail stores in the country later this year.

Apple said the impact of tariffs was limited in the March quarter because it was able to optimize its supply chain and build up inventory. This inventory buildup will help the company in the June quarter, according to CEO Tim Cook.

In March, Apple shipped 98% of its exports from India to the US, totaling around 3.1 million units, a significant rise from 84% in February, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The research firm also said that Apple plans to source all iPhones sold in the US from India by 2026, as its manufacturing partners expand their capacity by opening new factories.

India has a lower 26% tariff from the US compared to China’s 145%, and the two countries are working on a trade deal that could be signed later this year.
