Basic Rules of 13 Card Rummy

In simple terms, you have to form a series of either sequences or sets with the help of the 13 cards you receive. You can either form impure or pure sequences, and sets.

Sequences and sets

A pure sequence in a 13 Card Rummy game involves three or more consecutive cards that belong to the same suit, that is, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs and Aces. It does not involve a Joker card. For example, a group of Seven of Hearts, Eight of Hearts and Nine of Hearts is a pure sequence.

On the other hand, an impure sequence involves three or more consecutive cards that belong to the same suit, along with one or more Joker cards. For example, a group of Two of Spades, Joker and Three of Spades is an impure sequence

A set, however, consists of three cards that are of equal rank or value but belong to different suits. For example, a group of Seven of Diamonds, Seven of Spades, and Seven of Clubs is a set.

How You Are Assigned Points

You will be assigned points for the cards that do not belong to valid sequences or sets. The ‘face’ cards, namely, the King, Queen, Jack and Ace in a 13 Card Rummy game are worth 10 points each.

On the other hand, the ‘number’ cards, like Two, Three etc. carry points equivalent to their denomination.

At the end of the game, everyone displays their arranged cards. The player who accumulates the lowest number of points is declared the winner of the game.

Setting Up the Game

To play 13 Card Rummy, you will need to have a deck of 52 playing cards, chips, and 2-6 players. Before the game starts, each player will be told to draw a card. The player who draws the card of the highest value becomes the dealer.

After the dealer is selected, he or she will give each player 13 cards, or 3 face-down (hidden) and 10 face-up cards. So if you have 5 to 6 players, you will require 2 decks of 52 cards each. However, when you play online rummy , you will automatically receive the cards.

The dealer is in an important position, as he or she is responsible for dealing the cards to the player, shuffling the deck, and determining the flow of the game. Once everyone has received their cards, the dealer arranges the remaining cards to form the draw pile.

He or she then keeps the topmost card from the draw pile in a face-up manner next to the draw pile to form the discard pile.

v) Pair: Three cards where two of the cards have the same value. For example, 2 Number Four cards and 1 Joker card.
