When Classrooms Turn into Safety Zones: 1,200 Students Learn Road Safety Guidelines

An impactful road safety awareness programme was organised at Hamdard Public School, located in Talimabad, Sangam Vihar, New Delhi, as part of the National Road Safety Month. The theme for this year’s Road Safety Month—“Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha”—formed the core of the initiative. Keeping these objectives in focus, the programme was conducted by Earth Revital Foundation in collaboration with Crashfree India, through which nearly 1,200 students from Classes V to VIII were sensitised about the importance of road safety and responsible behaviour on roads.

Welcoming the initiative, School Principal Sehar M. A. Saiyed described road safety awareness among school children as one of the most pressing needs of the present time. She emphasised that early education on safe road practices can play a crucial role in shaping responsible and alert citizens.

Earth Revital Foundation Chairperson Archana Bhanga stated that the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety operates under the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration and provides a common platform to more than 400 non-governmental organisations across over 100 countries. The alliance focuses on knowledge-sharing, policy advocacy, accountability, and grassroots awareness campaigns to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities. She added that Earth Revital Foundation has been selected as one of the few Indian NGOs to contribute to this global mission.

According to Archana Bhanga, road accidents in developing countries have reached alarming levels, with school-going children increasingly becoming victims. In such a scenario, it is vital to educate children from an early age about traffic rules, safe pedestrian practices, and precautions while cycling or using vehicles, so that they not only protect themselves but also spread awareness within society.

During the programme, students actively participated in painting and debate competitions centred on road safety themes. The one-day event witnessed high levels of enthusiasm, with students expressing their creativity, awareness, and sense of social responsibility. Teachers also extended full support to ensure the success of the programme. Earth Revital Foundation provided chart papers, colour boxes, and other necessary materials to the participants.

With the objective of transforming road safety into a mass and community-driven movement in India, Crashfree India has conceptualised the “Civic Alliance for Safer Mobility.” Under this broader initiative, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is supporting the nationwide campaign Safety is the New Swag.

The campaign seeks to make responsible road behaviour socially aspirational and widely acceptable. Safe driving practices, the use of helmets and seat belts, and strict adherence to traffic rules are being promoted—especially among youth and everyday road users—as symbols of modern responsibility and pride. Through on-ground activities, citizen participation, and behaviour-change initiatives across multiple cities, this collective effort aims to achieve a 15 percent reduction in road accidents by 2030.
