The Gujarat Lions Women’s Rugby Team delivered a remarkable and inspiring performance at the Khelo India ASMITA Women’s West Zone National Rugby Tournament, held at Ajmer, Rajasthan from 12th to 15th December 2025, and proudly secured the Silver Medal, marking a major achievement for women’s rugby in Gujarat.

Facing strong competition from top West Zone teams, the Gujarat Lions displayed exceptional resilience, tactical discipline, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament, overcoming early challenges to reach the final.

Pool Stage Performance

Gujarat began their campaign with a confident and morale-boosting victory against Chhattisgarh, winning the opening match 15–5, setting a positive tone for the tournament.

In subsequent pool matches, Gujarat faced tough opponents and suffered close defeats against Maharashtra and Rajasthan. However, the team made a powerful comeback with a dominant performance against Madhya Pradesh, securing an emphatic 32–0 victory, showcasing their attacking strength and defensive solidity.

With this performance, Gujarat finished 3rd in their pool, qualifying for the knockout stage.

Knockout Stage Brilliance

In the Semi-Final, Gujarat Lions faced host team Rajasthan in a high-intensity encounter. Demonstrating composure under pressure and immense determination, Gujarat defeated Rajasthan 10–5, earning a well-deserved place in the final.

In the Final, Gujarat once again faced Maharashtra. Despite a valiant effort and strong resistance against a formidable opponent, Gujarat narrowly missed the gold medal, finishing as runners-up and proudly claiming the Silver Medal at the national-level tournament.

Team & Support Staff

The Gujarat Lions were led by Captain Janvi, whose leadership played a key role throughout the competition. The squad consisted of Komal, Dharmi, Nandini, Namrata, Ritika, Yashwi, Nidhi, Bhargavi, Archana, Khushbu, and Ajab, each contributing significantly to the team’s success.

The team was expertly guided by Coach Jinal, with seamless coordination managed by Manager Hinavanshi, and excellent player care provided by Physio Sukuruti, ensuring peak performance during the demanding schedule.
