India AI Mission

India is experiencing a significant transformation in artificial intelligence, led by the forward-thinking of PM Modi. The Indian government is also taking initiative and becoming a key player in the AI ecosystem. Due to this, lots of things become budget-friendly, like computing power, GPUs, and research.

In the earlier days, only giant companies controlled the AI economy in the country, but now things have changed due to the Modi government; students, startups, and innovators can easily access world-class AI tools.

Key initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission and the creation of Centers of Excellence for AI are helping build a strong AI ecosystem, promoting innovation and self-reliance in this vital sector.

AI Compute and Semiconductor Infrastructure

India is quickly building a strong AI computing and semiconductor infrastructure to support its expanding digital economy. The government wants to make a very powerful computing center with the help of 18,693 GPUs. It is nearly 9 times bigger than the open-source AI model DeepSeek and roughly two-thirds of the compute power used by ChatGPT.

Here are the key developments:

Open GPU marketplace helps startups, researchers, and students with easy access. In other countries where big companies control AI infrastructure, they make sure small players also get opportunities.

  • The government has chosen 10 companies to provide GPUs, ensuring a strong supply chain.
  • India wants to manufacture its own GPU in the coming years; their aim is to build their technology and reduce dependency on foreign technology.
  •  A new shared computing center will soon be launched, allowing researchers and startups to use GPUs for just ₹100 per hour, which is cheaper than the global cost.

India is working on building its own semiconductor; currently, it has 5 semiconductor plants that are under construction. These plants help India’s position in the global market.

India’s AI Models and Language Technologies

India has taken the initiative to build its own foundational AI models, like LLMs and Small Language Models (SLMs), through a call for proposals.

Digital India BHASHINI is an AI-based language translation platform that helps make digital content accessible in the local Indian language.

Sarvam-1-1 is an AI model with a 2-billion-parameter; it supports 10 Indian languages for translation and content creation.

Chitralekha is a free, open-source tool that helps to translate Indian languages easily.

Hanooman’s Everest 1.0 is a multilingual AI system created by SML. It currently supports 35 Indian languages and plans to add more than 90 languages.

AI-Driven Economic Growth: Around 80% of Indian companies now see AI as an important strategy, and 69% are planning to grow their AI investments in the coming days.

According to the NASSCOM Report, funding for Indian generative AI (GenAI) startups surged 6 times in FY2025, reaching USD 51 million.

India currently holds 16% of the global AI talent pool; it played an important role in automation, fintech, and healthcare.

Approximately 78% of small and medium businesses use AI-reported growth.

AI Integration with Digital Public Infrastructure

India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has transformed digital innovation with the help of government and private funding. Platforms like the Aadhaar card and UPI are the best examples, while private companies make specific applications. Now, these systems are integrated with AI to add smart features to financial and governance platforms.

At Mahakumbh 2025, with the help of AI-powered DPI solutions, they manage the world’s biggest human gathering. AI tools easily track the movement of railway passengers in Prayagraj. The Bhashini-based Kumbh Sah’AI’yak Chatbot provides voice-based lost-and-found services and real-time translation in multiple languages. Indian Railways and UP Police both worked with the help of AI and set an example on the global platform.

Conclusion - India AI Mission

India is continuously growing in advanced artificial intelligence with the help of the Indian government by building AI infrastructure, indigenous AI models, and improving digital public infrastructure. It focuses on open data, low-cost access to high-performance computing, and AI tools that are designed for local needs. As more industries use AI tools, it strengthens its digital economy and also helps the country to become self-reliant. India has a vision to become a global leader in AI innovation.
