India is preparing for the next stage of its bullet train revolution. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has commenced work on detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the upcoming high-speed rail routes across the nation.

This move marks a major effort to expand the bullet train network beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor currently under construction. The NHSRCL, a joint venture between the Central Government and several state governments, is tasked with executing high-speed rail projects across India.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is progressing steadily with major key civil works such as station foundations, river bridges, and tunneling activities currently underway.

The 508-km high speed rail project, supported technically and financially by Japan, extends more than Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Land acquisition of 1,389.5 hectares and all required clearances have been completed, while 24 of the 28 tender packages have already been awarded.

As per official data, Construction is moving swiftly, foundation covering 406 km, piers for 395 km, and girder launching for 312 km. Track laying has already begun on 127 km of viaducts, while work on erecting  is in progress.

Out of the 12 planned stations, foundation works have been completed at eight stations in Gujarat, while construction continues at three stations in Maharashtra and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) hub. Sixteen river bridges are finished with work advancing on nine others. The Gujarat tunnel has been completed and work on the 21-km undersea tunnel has begun, with 4 km steady completed in Maharashtra.

When Will the First Bullet Train Start?

India’s first bullet train route, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project , is being developed with technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan, both technically and financially. The Gujarat section, stretching from Vapi to Sabarmati, is targeted by December 2027, and the entire route including Maharashtra by December 2029.

Bullet Train Time for Mumbai Ahmedabad

The Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train will operate at a speed of 320 km/h, covering 508 km across 12 stations. According to the NHSRCL, 35 trains will run on each side. During peak hours, trains will arrive at 20 minutes during peak hours and 30 minutes for other scenarios. With limited station stops, the train journey will take just 1 hr 58 minutes. While stopping at all the station stops, the travel train will take 2hr 57 minutes.

Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train ticket prices are expected to cost 1.5 times more than a first class AC ticket of the Mumbai Ahmedabad Duronto Express.The fare will start from Rs. 3000. with the lowest ticket price will be Rs. 250.Its business class will 2×2 and standard class will 2×3 seats. NHSRCL also said for heavy luggage they will charge extra. 

Current Status of Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Earlier, the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train project was progressing mainly in Gujarat as land acquisition in Maharashtra was held. However, the land acquisition in Maharashtra has now grown.
